The desirability of age

I’m trying to work out if I like “reliced” guitars.  (For those that don’t know, that’s a guitar that has been artificially aged to look like it’s got 60s mojo.)  This ranges from slightly discoloured pickguards and hardware with a patina of rust, through to looking like a previous owner had acid sweat and sandpaper skin.

Why?  Oh, no reason.

No!!! That is truly the darkside! I like my strats vibrant and sprightly looking - like what they did back in their prime in the rock n’ roll years! Not soiled and grubby and unloved-looking. Leo would frown upon relicing, i’m sure…. but then i do like things to have permanent air of newness- there is a word for this affliction, but for once, Google has let me down…

Yeah, I like new stuff to be shiny too, though the usual thing that happens is that I ding said new object (car, guitar, whatever) within a few weeks of purchase and end up feeling completely gutted. Maybe if I bought a “pre-knackered” guitar that would avoid some of this. It’s the neck on that strat in the auction that puts me off; I don’t mind a few scratches on the body, and I’m probably going to end up chipping the headstock on a cymbal at some point, but the back of that neck looks positively scrofulous. Anyway, Kyla just put me off it; I showed her the picture and her comment was, “Hey, when did you start wanting to play country ‘n’ western?” Ow.

Most trumpeters I know like to dent their instrument first themselves, so that when it gets an inevitable gig scar it’s less upsetting.
